Who needs Portuguese translation
Portuguese is spoken by more than 250 million people. It is the official language of Portugal and Brazil, and also of Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Timor-Leste and Equatorial Guinea.
For an exporter, the two markets that matter first are Brazil, one of the world’s largest consumer and industrial markets, and Portugal, a member of the European Union and the eurozone. Portugal brings EU rules with it. Product instructions, labels and safety information generally need to be available in the official language of the country where the product is sold, and for Portugal that means Portuguese.
Typical documents
- User manuals and installation guides
- Product catalogs and data sheets
- Safety data sheets and compliance documents
- Contracts, terms and conditions, and tenders
- Packaging and labels
- Websites and software strings
Taia keeps the layout of Word, PowerPoint and spreadsheet files (and InDesign on Pro), so the Portuguese file arrives looking like the original.
Where Portuguese translation goes wrong
Choosing the wrong variant. European Portuguese (pt-PT) and Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR) share a grammar, but they differ in vocabulary, in the spelling of some words, and in everyday phrasing. A text written for one reads as foreign in the other, and for a manual or a contract that costs trust. Decide the variant per market. Taia offers both as separate target languages, so you can order each from the same source file.
Forms of address. In Brazil, “você” is the usual neutral form for “you”, and it appears in manuals, apps and websites. In Portugal, “você” can sound abrupt or distant, and documents often use the third person or a formal construction with “o senhor” or “a senhora”. Put the choice in the style guide so the whole document follows it.
Terminology that differs by country. Common technical and everyday words can differ between the two variants. A glossary per variant prevents a Brazilian term from slipping into a Portugal manual.
Text expansion. Portuguese usually runs longer than English. Buttons, table headers, labels and packaging need room, and a layout that fits in English may overflow. Check the final file, not only the text.
How Taia handles Portuguese
Upload your file (Taia reads 65+ formats on Pro), choose Portuguese (Portugal) or Portuguese (Brazil), and AI translation returns the file in minutes with the formatting in place. Customer content is never used to train AI models.
Consistency comes from three tools. A glossary fixes how your terms are translated in each variant. A style guide sets tone and address. Translation memory stores approved segments so later documents match. Glossary, style guide and translation memory are on Pro and Enterprise. Translation memory does not make AI translation cheaper. It keeps wording consistent, and on professional per-word work, matches are discounted.
When a document needs a human, order professional translation from the same project, done by a native linguist for the right variant.
