Markets: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Belgium

Who needs German translation

Germany has the largest population in the European Union and is one of its largest economies, and German is also an official language in Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg, and in the German-speaking community of Belgium. For an exporter, one German text can serve several markets at once.

German buyers, especially in engineering, industry and the public sector, expect documentation in their own language. EU product rules generally expect instructions, labels and safety information to be available in the official language of the country where the product is sold, and a manual in English may not meet that expectation. Customers also read a careful German text as a sign of a careful product.

Typical documents

  • User manuals and installation guides, often with diagrams and numbered steps
  • Product catalogs and data sheets, where tables and part numbers must survive
  • Safety data sheets and compliance documents
  • Contracts, terms and conditions, and tenders
  • Packaging and labels, where space is tight
  • Websites and software strings

Most of these are laid out in Word, PowerPoint or spreadsheets (InDesign on Pro). Taia keeps the layout, so you get back a German file that looks like the original instead of a block of text to reformat.

Where German translation goes wrong

Sie or du. German has a formal and an informal “you”, and pronouns, verb forms and possessives all change with the choice. Business and technical documents normally use Sie. Decide the register once, put it in the style guide, and keep it the same across the manual, the website and the app.

Compound words and text expansion. German joins nouns into long single words, and German text is usually longer than the English it replaces. A button label, a table column or a line on a package that fits in English can overflow in German. Check the layout in the final file, and ask for shorter wording where space is fixed.

Grammar that breaks short strings. German nouns have three genders and four cases, and articles and adjective endings change with them. A fragment such as Delete {item} has no single correct translation, because the form depends on what replaces the variable. Software strings need context, or they need to be rewritten so the variable stands alone.

Regional spelling. Switzerland does not use the letter ß and writes ss instead, and some vocabulary differs between Germany, Austria and Switzerland. If you sell in more than one of them, say which spelling and vocabulary you want in the style guide, and have the final text checked by someone who knows the market.

How Taia handles German

Upload your file (Taia reads 65+ formats on Pro), choose German, and AI translation returns the file in minutes with the formatting in place. Customer content is never used to train AI models.

Consistency comes from three tools that work together. A glossary fixes how your product terms are translated. A style guide sets tone and address. Translation memory stores approved segments so related documents match. Glossary, style guide and translation memory are on Pro and Enterprise. Translation memory does not make AI translation cheaper. It keeps wording consistent, and on professional per-word work, matches are discounted.

When a document needs a human, someone on your own team can review it in Translation Studio on Pro, or you can order professional translation from a native German linguist.

Three ways to translate into German

Pick one per document, or combine them. On Pro and Enterprise, the same glossary and translation memory sit behind all three, so your approved terms carry over whoever finishes the text.

AI translation

A formatted first draft in minutes, for internal documents or as the starting point for a reviewer. AI translation is part of a Taia subscription; see pricing for what each plan includes.

Your own team, in Translation Studio

If a colleague, a subsidiary or a distributor reads German, invite them to your organization and assign them a task on the AI draft. They review it segment by segment in the Translation Editor, with translation memory matches, glossary terms and your style guide beside each sentence, then submit and deliver it. Translation Studio is on Pro and Enterprise.

Professional translation by Taia's linguists

When a contract, a safety sheet or a label has to be right and nobody on your team has the time or the language, order it from the same project. There are three levels:

Essential

from $0.07/word

AI translation post-edited by one professional linguist.

Enhanced

from $0.10/word

A translator and a reviser. This workflow follows ISO 17100.

Ultimate

from $0.14/word

Translation, Editing and Proofreading (TEP). This workflow follows ISO 17100.

Professional prices are list prices across languages. The exact price for German and your file appears on the instant quote when you upload it.

German translation turnaround

AI translation takes minutes, whatever the length of the file. When your own team reviews in Translation Studio, you can set a deadline on the task. For professional translation, the delivery date is shown on your instant quote before you order, so you know it before you commit.

German translation: frequently asked questions

Should I use Sie or du in German translations?

It depends on your audience, and it should be decided once. Business documents, manuals, contracts and B2B websites normally use the formal Sie. Consumer apps and some younger brands use du. A translation that mixes the two reads as careless. Write the choice in your Taia style guide so the AI and your linguists follow the same rule.

How do I translate a document into German?

Upload your file to Taia, choose German as the target language, and the AI translation comes back in minutes with the original formatting kept. Taia reads 65+ file formats on Pro. To have it checked, assign the review to someone on your team in Translation Studio (Pro), or order professional translation from the same project without re-uploading.

Is AI translation good enough for German?

For internal documents and first drafts, usually yes. For contracts, labels, safety information and anything customers rely on, order professional translation from a native linguist. If you have a German-speaking colleague or subsidiary, they can review the AI draft in Translation Studio (Pro). All three work in the same project.

How do I keep German product terminology consistent?

Add your approved terms to a Taia glossary and set up a style guide for tone and address. On Pro, the glossary keeps terms fixed and the style guide sets tone and address for the Advanced and Premium AI engines and for your linguists, and translation memory stores approved segments so later documents match earlier ones. Glossary, style guide and translation memory are on Pro and Enterprise.

Who translates the professional German work?

Native German linguists from Taia's network of more than 2,000 vetted linguists. The Enhanced and Ultimate workflows follow ISO 17100, with a second person reviewing the translator's work. You see the delivery date on the instant quote before you order, so you're not guessing about timing.
