Who needs Dutch translation

Dutch is the official language of the Netherlands, and one of the official languages of Belgium, where it is spoken in Flanders and in Brussels alongside French. It is also official in Suriname and in Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. The Netherlands is a major trading country and a gateway for many exporters into the European Union.

Dutch and Flemish buyers expect documentation in Dutch. EU product rules generally expect instructions, labels and safety information to be available in the official language of the country where the product is sold. A business that sells in both the Netherlands and Belgium should decide early whether one Dutch text is enough or whether each market needs its own.

Typical documents

  • User manuals and installation guides, often with diagrams and numbered steps
  • Product catalogs and data sheets, where tables and part numbers must survive
  • Safety data sheets and compliance documents
  • Contracts, terms and conditions, and tenders
  • Packaging and labels, where space is tight
  • Websites and software strings

Most of these are laid out in Word, PowerPoint or spreadsheets (InDesign on Pro). Taia keeps the layout, so you get back a Dutch file that looks like the original instead of a block of text to reformat.

Where Dutch translation goes wrong

Netherlands or Flanders. The Dutch of the Netherlands and the Flemish of Belgium share a standard language but differ in vocabulary, expressions and tone. Pick the variant for each market, and order it separately where the text is aimed at consumers.

Je or u. Dutch has an informal “je” and a formal “u”. Dutch business writing is informal by international standards, and many brands use “je” even to customers, while contracts, legal and public-sector texts use “u”. Decide the register once and write it in the style guide.

Compound words. Dutch writes compounds as one word (a “solar panel” is a “zonnepaneel”). Splitting them into separate words, as English does, is a common error and reads as unpolished. Terms in your glossary should be recorded in their correct compound form.

Articles and spelling details. Nouns take “de” or “het”, and the choice affects adjectives and pronouns, so fragments with variables need context. The digraph “ij” is capitalized as a unit (IJssel), a detail that automated tools often get wrong at the start of a sentence or a heading. Dutch text is also usually longer than English, so check labels and table columns in the final file.

How Taia handles Dutch

Upload your file (Taia reads 65+ formats on Pro), choose Dutch, and AI translation returns the file in minutes with the formatting in place. Customer content is never used to train AI models.

Consistency comes from three tools that work together. A glossary fixes how your product terms are translated. A style guide sets tone and address. Translation memory stores approved segments so related documents match. Glossary, style guide and translation memory are on Pro and Enterprise. Translation memory does not make AI translation cheaper. It keeps wording consistent, and on professional per-word work, matches are discounted.

When a document needs a human, someone on your own team can review it in Translation Studio on Pro, or you can order professional translation from a native Dutch linguist.

Three ways to translate into Dutch

Pick one per document, or combine them. On Pro and Enterprise, the same glossary and translation memory sit behind all three, so your approved terms carry over whoever finishes the text.

AI translation

A formatted first draft in minutes, for internal documents or as the starting point for a reviewer. AI translation is part of a Taia subscription; see pricing for what each plan includes.

Your own team, in Translation Studio

If a colleague, a subsidiary or a distributor reads Dutch, invite them to your organization and assign them a task on the AI draft. They review it segment by segment in the Translation Editor, with translation memory matches, glossary terms and your style guide beside each sentence, then submit and deliver it. Translation Studio is on Pro and Enterprise.

Professional translation by Taia's linguists

When a contract, a safety sheet or a label has to be right and nobody on your team has the time or the language, order it from the same project. There are three levels:

Essential

from $0.07/word

AI translation post-edited by one professional linguist.

Enhanced

from $0.10/word

A translator and a reviser. This workflow follows ISO 17100.

Ultimate

from $0.14/word

Professional prices are list prices across languages. The exact price for Dutch and your file appears on the instant quote when you upload it.

Dutch translation turnaround

AI translation takes minutes, whatever the length of the file. When your own team reviews in Translation Studio, you can set a deadline on the task. For professional translation, the delivery date is shown on your instant quote before you order, so you know it before you commit.

Dutch translation: frequently asked questions

Is Flemish a different language from Dutch?

Flemish is the Dutch spoken in Belgium, not a separate language, but vocabulary, expressions and tone differ from the Netherlands. A text written for one audience can read as slightly foreign to the other. Taia lists Dutch and Flemish as separate targets, so you can order each market in its own variant.

How do I translate a document into Dutch?

Upload your file to Taia, choose Dutch as the target language, and the AI translation comes back in minutes with the original formatting kept. Taia reads 65+ file formats on Pro. To have it checked, assign the review to someone on your team in Translation Studio (Pro), or order professional translation from the same project without re-uploading.

Is AI translation good enough for Dutch?

For internal documents and first drafts, usually yes. For contracts, labels, safety information and marketing, order professional translation from a native linguist. If someone in your Benelux sales team reads Dutch, they can review the AI draft in Translation Studio (Pro) and check it reads right for the Netherlands or for Flanders. All three work in the same project.

How do I keep Dutch product terminology consistent?

Add your approved terms to a Taia glossary and set up a style guide for tone and address. On Pro, the glossary keeps terms fixed and the style guide sets tone and address for the Advanced and Premium AI engines and for your linguists, and translation memory stores approved segments so later documents match earlier ones. Glossary, style guide and translation memory are on Pro and Enterprise.

Who translates the professional Dutch work?

Native Dutch linguists from Taia's network of more than 2,000 vetted linguists. The Enhanced and Ultimate workflows follow ISO 17100, with a second person reviewing the translator's work. You see the delivery date on the instant quote before you order, so you're not guessing about timing.
